SETT2016 | Both digital and analog work - part 3

As I wrote in the introduction to part 1, I’m pretty rubbish at blogging. I had planned to share a bit every day, but I realise there isn’t enough time. So I’ll just have to summarise a bit at a time. This weekend I’ve focused on setting the broadcast graphics for all the different formats and what I have left are a few elements for the Talkshow.
Neat and organized
Something I’ve wanted to do since last time is rack-mount all our equipment. Partly so the gear lasts longer, but also because everything becomes so much smoother when it’s all pre-wired and ready. It also lowers the threshold for using the gear. I ordered the rack cabinet, some shelves and drawers and mounted everything on Thursday. Happy and satisfied. All that’s needed now is to plug in power and a Thunderbolt cable into the computer.
Most of our broadcast equipment is now rack-mounted.
What’s in the rack now is a mixer, a compressor/limiter, an audio interface and a bunch of transmitters for wireless microphones. In total with capacity for up to six mics. If there’s room and it works well, a wireless router might also go in there. Everyone who’s been to SETT before knows the wireless network can be a bit finicky at times. That’s why we’ll run our own network there.
Analog tinkering
To break up the weekend’s and evenings’ digital tinkering I wanted to switch to some analog tinkering. Of course I thought we’d need a Tänktanken-clipboard for our hosts. The idea was a slightly retro-inspired clipboard, so after a bit of shopping at Clas Ohlsson and Panduro I enjoyed some cutting, gluing, spraying and other stuff.
Wirecast - time to set up the broadcast
All the graphics and video I’ve created are starting to be finished and what I’ve worked on most today is putting together the documents for the different days with all the content and creating scenes in the Wirecast software.
The broadcast consists of, among other things, a logo, program intros, outro, pause music, schedules, lower thirds, camera views, a Twitter feed and any video playlists for the breaks.
Finally
I’m now starting to reach a stage where I can focus on what I’ll be doing during SETT, running the broadcast. This week I hope to get a small technical gadget that will make things a bit easier. More about that will hopefully come in the next post. There’s only one week left now so the coming week will be even more jam-packed. So many practical things to sort out. The last thing I’m doing today after publishing this is adding another programme item, then that’ll be it. Have a nice Sunday and wishing you a great week!
