A three-day talk show at SETT2015 - part 1 - Introduction

So it’s that time again. Event time. Tänktanken Talkshow. We ran the concept at Årstaskolan last year the evening before SETT with heavy hitters like Kristina Alexanderson, Edward Jensinger, Richard Gatarski and Daniel Barker, besides our own heavy in-house stars.

In front of a live audience of just over a hundred and live-streamed on the web, we got a taste for more. We usually try to run a bigger event each year (FETT13, HOPP14 etc.) and this year we had the opportunity to do this in Lärarförbundet’s booth E:42 and of course we took the chance. Fingers crossed the sum will be positive in the end, because things never go as we think and plan. Therefore I thought I’d run a small mini-series in blog format where I write a bit about what goes into planning an event like this. And hopefully some of you will find it a bit interesting to read as well.

SETUP

The idea is that we at Årstaskolan will run Tänktanken Talkshow live, from morning to evening on the stage in Lärarförbundet’s booth during all three days of SETT2015. Four shows will be done per day with interesting guests that we line up, with room for a few extra things in between. All of this will also be live-streamed on the web, free for everyone. Besides getting an opportunity to meet lots of interesting people out at the fair itself, we get the chance to spread this to those who can’t make it there. Of course everything will be available afterwards. Everything is produced, planned, created and carried out by us at Årstaskolan.

PREREQUISITES

Årstaskolan is not a media or event agency. We are a normal municipal school. Therefore we have completely different primary tasks than this. But we think it’s bloody fun to do this every now and then. Trying to show that it is precisely that — bloody fun and rewarding to work and operate in a school and in a municipal organisation — makes us more than happy to shift up a gear and do that little extra for each other and our students. Because it requires a lot of collaboration. And trust. A core group of around 10 people — a mix of teachers, school leaders, student welfare, and other assorted people, like me — are involved with responsibility for different areas. Decentralised and with an agile mindset. No top-down. It takes too long. So the conditions are, in other words, perfect. :)

OK, SO WHAT’S NEEDED?

Hosts, guests, cameramen, video producer, video production, stage, stage furniture, props, projector, stage sound, TV, content, broadcast graphics, website, web design, graphics, app, streaming service, PR, social media, music, assistants, tech, peripheral equipment, audio equipment, cables, backups of everything, scheduling, segments, Internet, power, food and water etc… oh, right… batteries! Now the list looks a bit longer in reality because all this has to be broken down into details. But you get it. Nothing can be left to chance. And now we know what’s needed. Now it’s just time to get started.

NEXT EPISODE - TECH

In the next episode of this blog series we go through the tech. The stuff you shouldn’t see. The things that should just work. Computers, mobiles, cameras, tablets, internet, microphones, mixing desks, projectors and more.
