Soon it's time for the new Kunskapshubben

Since 2008 Kunskapshubben has been our hub for lesson videos. Now we’re entering a new era.

In 2008 we launched Kunskapshubben at Årstaskolan. It has of course been rebuilt and expanded since then and now it’s time again. Technology moves on and so must we. I’ve been working on the new Hub on and off for a month or so and it’s getting close to launch. Although I can say it’s already launched. You can find it at www.kunskapshubben.se, but not if you go in from Årstaskolan’s site.

Why are we doing this now?

Well, first and foremost because the Joomla version it was built with has reached its “end-of-life”. It’s also part of the strategy to separate all our sites. The old Kunskapshubben was tucked into Årstaskolan’s site. I think it’s better to have separate sites/services that work well for the purpose they were created for than one site that tries to do everything and ends up being just okay. We also need even better mobile accessibility. The previous Hub worked okay with, for example, tablets and phones, but not the embed codes. And many people have their videos from the Hub embedded on their blogs and sites. Now that works too.

Kunskapshubben is also starting to become more like our own YouTube and, in step with how much video students produce, they can now also log in with their Google Apps account and upload videos directly from an iPad, then grab the embed code and embed them on their blogs. What isn’t quite finished is the comment system. And that’s important. We have lots of comments on the site and students around the country comment quite actively and it increases the longer time goes on.

Did you know our videos have been viewed over 1 million times?

Yes, it was actually a month or so ago that we passed that magical threshold. Absolutely fantastic, we all think. Kunskapshubben has about 500–600 visits every day and we’re now pumping out about 1000 GB of video per month, or 1 TB.
